Description

The “art barn,” as it is called, is the stunning result of collaboration between two builders and an architect with whom they have worked for years. When undertaking their own project, the identical twin brothers from Hungary turned to Case Development’s Greg Sharp to design their Southampton, New York weekend retreat.

An accessory building to the main house on this five-acre site, the art barn functions as a guest house and art gallery/play space for the brothers, who love art and socializing with friends. The building is a clean, cubic structure built upon a poured concrete foundation that was installed by the previous owner but never developed. Starting with a large front entrance, the interior is designed to encourage the unrestricted flow of guests throughout the space. The upper floor is used mainly for gatherings and entertaining, while the lower floor offers private bedrooms, a den and a patio.

Unique Features

The budget-friendly design of the art barn uses a light steel structure and takes advantage of an existing foundation on a hilly parcel. Looking much smaller from the front, the building adds a level in the rear and makes extensive use of light wells to brighten the lower floor. The façade of the house uses reclaimed wood. Inside, radiant floor heating, spray foam insulation, passive cooling and solar design maintain lower financial and environmental costs.
